Are you planning home improvements or repairs?

Following an Office of Fair Trading (OFT) research project on home repairs and improvements last year, with help from Trading Standards, TrustMark and Citizens Advice the OFT have uploaded the following guidance documents onto their website:

  • Business Top Tips
  • Consumer Top Tips
  • Consumer Top Tips Checklist

These documents, which provide advice for businesses and consumers, have been designed to assist both parties when completing home repair work.

Nottinghamshire County Council advise local people to use the Buy With Confidence Scheme to find a reputable trader and obtain at least 3 itemised quotes.

Links to the documents can be found on the OFT website:

The Government have also produced a fact sheet for the general public. Tobacco Display Fact Sheet [PDF 127KB]

Identity Theft Scam

Trading Standards are receiving reports of people receiving calls from people claiming that they can fix their computer.

The phone rings and the caller asks for the householder, quoting their name and address before claiming to be calling from Microsoft or the householders internet provider. The customer is then directed to a website and told to download a progam that allows the caller remote control and access to the customer's computer. They may ask for a fee via credit or debit card. Various "fixes" for the "problem" are then carried out to justify the access being allowed.

Never give your bank details or credit card details to any unsoliciited seller over the telephone, no matter how authentic they sound. These calls often come from outside the UK, making it very difficult to get redress.

If you are concerned about these scams or fear you may have been targeted, please contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.
